The history of Cantine Ermes began in Sicily, in the Belice Valley, in July 1998. Cantine Ermes is a Cooperative Winery nestled between the towns of Santa Ninfa and Gibellina, towns that had been devastated by the 1968 earthquake. Post Earthquake in the 80, the great Artist Burri came to town to make a monument for those lost in the Earthquake and created Cretto di Burri. After Burris Cretto started gaining worldwide attention, the region had a major influx of art students looking to create. Around the same time, the MAC was founded and the new town of Gibellina Nuova was founded and the entire area was undergoing a rebirth. This was the time that Cantine Ermes was founded by nine courageous winemakers who decided to join forces sharing a dream: an innovative, dynamic, world-oriented winery.
For the VR Tasting we will focus exclusively on their origins in the Belice Valley and feature their core list of products: Vento di Mare, Quattro Quarti, and Epicentro. Each pays homage to the region in their own way.
Vento di Mare translated to Wind of the Sea, which is referencing the Siroccan winds that come off the Saharan desert and pick up speed across the Tyrrhenian Sea which is broken up by the rocky island of Sicily, without this persistent wind, the island of Sicily would be too humid to grow grapes worth vinifying.
Quattro Quarti is a selection of their finest 4 Vineyard Sites.
Epicentro is the vineyard planted on top of the Epicenter of the Earthquake that rocked the Valley in 1968 just 10 Kilometers from where their headquarters sits today.
